I have always been one to make a gift rather than buy one, but I have also recently become acutely aware of the impact that consumerism has on our increasingly fragile planet. These days I value new experiences, yummy food, the odd meaningful trinket and a reliable sleeping pad. In the spirit of [living environmentally connected](https://blog.avid4.com/blog/6-ways-avid4-adventure-is-committed-to-being-environmentally-sustainable) and being kind to the earth this holiday season, I am sharing a few eco-friendly ways to create personalized, unique, thoughtful gifts that have a very low carbon footprint. At times, I know I do. I’m grateful to live in Colorado where beautiful, easily accessible outdoor recreation areas abound. It’s a privilege to have grown up here and experienced the outdoors starting at a young age. However, it’s easy to think that these outdoor spaces will be around to enjoy forever. With [climate change](https://blog.avid4.com/blog/kids-are-key-11-ways-for-parents-and-kids-to-fight-climate-change) and other challenges our planet is facing—the reality is—that’s not for certain.
